This week, the best female golfers from Europe and the United States will compete head-to-head for the glory and prestige of the 18th Solheim Cup, which will be held 22nd to 24th September in the heart of Costa del Sol in Andalucía, Finca Cortesin, Spain.
We at the #GGB office definitely remember the thriller moments in September 2021, when Europe fought strong to win the Solheim Cup. It was Matilda Castrén’s putt that gave Europe the victory, and wow what a putt it was indeed! We still get goosebumps as we write this blog post; and we’re certainly not the only ones who remember that moment as if it happened yesterday.
This year, the Europeans are looking for a third consecutive win and their eighth overall win. Team USA has won the Solheim Cup 10 times, and the latest victory was in 2017 at Des Moines Golf and Country Club in Iowa.
It is incredible to see the growth of women’s professional golf through the amount of spectators and visibility that the sport receives. We feel honored and proud to see the hype that is generated around ladies golf. And specifically around high-level professional golf. It is marvelous to see how women’s professional golf has received huge audiences, as well as media coverage. The level of ladies golf is higher than ever before. Cheers to women’s professional golf!
So, what is the Solheim Cup?
The Solheim Cup is a biennial team tournament between the top professional female golfers from Europe versus the best pro women from the United States. The flow of the event is very smooth and spectator-friendly, as the different days are organized in a similar manner as the Ryder Cup:
Day 1 (Friday) - Four FOURSOME matches in a morning session and four BETTER BALL matches in an afternoon session. A total of 8 players from each team participate in each session.
Day 2 (Saturday) - Four FOURSOME matches in a morning session and four BETTER BALL matches in an afternoon session. A total of 8 players from each team participate in each session.
Day 3 (Sunday) - 12 SINGLES matches; meaning that all 12 players from each team participate.
The total amount of points is 28 points, thus 14.5 points are required to win the Solheim Cup, and 14 points are required for the defending champion to retain the Solheim Cup. In addition, it is worth noting that all matches are played to a maximum of 18 holes, hence if the score is tied after 18 holes, then the point is split, meaning that each team earns a half point.
Each team also has a captain, just like in the Ryder Cup. Team Europe’s captain is Suzann Pettersen (from Norway), and USA’s is Stacy Lewis (American). The players of this year’s Solheim Cup have been announced and we are proud to present to you both Team Europe and Team USA.
